Webinar: Digitalisation and AI in Orthopaedics and Traumatology

Artificial intelligence is increasingly entering orthopaedic trauma through fracture recognition, classification, outcome prediction, clinical research and digital decision-support tools. This EFORT Educational Webinar examines what these developments currently mean for orthopaedic surgeons and researchers, moving beyond general discussion of AI to consider how the technology is being introduced into real clinical and scientific workflows.

The first presentation will review the current state of artificial intelligence in orthopaedic trauma. Participants can expect examples of how algorithms are being investigated or used to support diagnosis, fracture classification and predictive outcome modelling. The session will also consider how AI-generated information may complement clinical expertise without removing the need for professional judgement, appropriate validation and careful interpretation.

A second presentation will share findings from OTdigital 2026, the European congress for digitalisation in orthopaedics and traumatology. This part of the webinar will place individual AI applications within the wider development of digital orthopaedics, including clinical translation, implementation, research methodology and the European regulatory environment. It should help participants distinguish between promising experimental tools and technologies that are sufficiently developed for routine clinical use.

The programme also addresses a question frequently raised as artificial intelligence becomes more capable: will AI replace the orthopaedic surgeon? Rather than treating human expertise and machine analysis as competing alternatives, the discussion will examine how AI may alter the surgeon’s role, support complex decisions and reshape collaboration between clinicians, engineers and data scientists. The webinar concludes with a live discussion involving the full faculty and audience.

Speakers include Professor Meir Marmor of the University of California San Francisco, Professor David Back of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Professor Dominik Pförringer of the Technical University of Munich. The webinar is chaired by Professor Bernd Grimm of the Luxembourg Institute of Health and Dr Martin Breitwieser of Paracelsus Medical Private University Salzburg.
