Presented by Alex Vris, the session examines treatment options for critical-sized bone defects, with a particular focus on reconstructive strategies that use internal fixation.
Large bone defects remain one of the difficult problems encountered after severe trauma, debridement and failed fracture healing. Reconstruction requires more than simply obtaining mechanical stability: the size and biology of the defect, condition of the surrounding tissues and choice of reconstructive technique all influence whether successful bone healing can be achieved.
The webinar forms part of the 2026–2027 Limb Reconstruction: A Masterclass on Contemporary Management Techniques series developed for fellows and early-career consultants. Across the wider programme, limb reconstruction is considered using circular frames, plates and intramedullary nails, with sessions addressing open fractures, non-union, soft-tissue reconstruction, bone defects and bone infection.
This session focuses specifically on internal fixation approaches to critical-sized bone loss, placing the problem within contemporary limb reconstruction practice. It follows an earlier session in the series examining how critical-sized bone voids are defined and how successful reconstruction should be assessed, and precedes dedicated sessions on bone infection later in 2026.
The webinar is organised through the British Limb Reconstruction Society and is delivered live online as a one-hour educational session, with on-demand access available to registered participants afterwards.
